Mixing With Water

Domus Mineral Paints require water to be added prior to usage. Why?

  • Allows for a cleaner product by not having to add toxic stabilizers, and
  • Reduces our carbon footprint by up to 40%.

Mixing with water or diluting the product with water is as simple as pouring the concentrated paint into a separate, clean mixing bucket, adding the amount of water listed below (dilution rate), then using a paddle drill or a spatula to mix thoroughly. You should mix for 2 – 4 minutes until there is uniform consistency with no standing water.

FIELDS OF APPLICATION

Excellent non-acrylic primer paint for interior and exterior surfaces, provides an anchor and consolidation coat for mineral paints and plasters when they are being applied to all Portland cement surfaces and new sheetrock. BioGrip Medium provides an anchor coat for application of mineral paints and plasters on synthetic stuccos, acrylic and solvent painted surfaces where mineral paints or plaster finishes are desired. BioGrip Medium is formulated to adhere to all surfaces, interior and exterior. BioGrip Medium, a potassium silicate paint, provides superior adhesion than typical acrylic or waterborne paints. Extreme durability in all environmental conditions and climates.

BioGrip Medium can be used as a 1st coat paint for new and old sheetrock, masonry repairs, and as a decorative finish paint for wall and ceilings. For example, when used as a 1st coat primer, only 1 coat of final finish is required applying BioDomus SuperFlat or EcoDomus Matte (as a decorative finish), i.e. the 2nd coat finish.

BioGrip Medium is a medium-fine granulated potassium silicate paint developed as a primer base for all mineral plasters. Medium granulation is viable when covered with only 1 coat of paint or very fine, thin plasters, such as venetian plasters Grassello Bio or BioMarmorino. For one (1) base coats such as BioCement GF and GM, or two (2)-coats of most plasters, BioGrip Medium granulation should be fully covered upon final coat of plaster application.

APPLICATION CYCLE INSTRUCTIONS

BRUSH AND ROLLER APPLICATIONS

1ST COAT     Dilute BioGrip Medium with 40% water, maximum 6 liters of water per one (1) 15 liter bucket of BioGrip Medium.

On porous surfaces apply product abundantly so as to penetrate sufficiently to consolidate and bond correctly.

On non-porous surfaces apply product evenly as needed to cover surface completely, being careful not to leave voids or unpainted surfaces. Diluted material must be stirred constantly to permit suspension of granules and not permit settling at bottom of paint buckets during application.

2nd COAT     No 2nd coat is needed unless product was improperly applied, or unless old or worn surfaces have absorbed excessive material and may require an additional application. Always allow at least 8 – 12 hours drying time before applying any 2nd coats.

SUGGESTIONS     When mixing large quantities of BioGrip Medium it is advised to pour out sufficient quantity of diluted material into the roller bucket or pail so that the brush or roller cover is not completely submerged, consuming all paint product before adding new additional painting material. Stir again the larger quantity of diluted material before re-supplying the pail or roller bucket with product. This will ensure an even supply of paint product and granules mixed properly together so that the BioGrip Medium will be consumed correctly.

PAINT SPRAYERS

1st COAT     Use correct spray tip and filter as may be required to apply granulated paint material. Failure to follow paint sprayer recommendations for granulated paint may cause serious or permanent damage to sprayer or spray tip. Airless sprayers are considered more ideal for this type of paint product. Follow dilution and application instructions as indicated for brush and roller applications. Care must be taken during spraying time that diluted paint material is stirred often so that paint solution and granules are consumed correctly during spraying.

2nd COAT     No 2nd coat is needed unless product was not sufficiently applied during spraying.

SPRAY TIP USAGE     BioGrip Medium is a heavy aggregate and can create difficulties using an airless sprayer unless the sprayer is a high compression sprayer, using no filters, applying product with a # 0.025 mm size Titanium spray tip. Consult paint sprayer manufacturer always before spraying aggregate paints.

GRAIN SIZE     0.5 – 0.6 mm

MIXING PAINT & WATER

Most of our paint formulas are concentrated and require water to be added to them for proper use. This process means we can sell more coverage in an economical package that decreases the cost for transport, reduces the carbon footprint, helping the your pocket book and the environment.

Mix paint and water with an electric drill and paint paddle, or mix well by hand! If water is sitting on the top of your mixture, the paint is not properly mixed!

TOOLS

Apply with brush, roller or with an appropriate sprayer.

DRYING TIME

Ideal drying time is at least twelve hours. With lower temperature and humidity more time may be needed.

Do not apply BioGrip Medium on the exterior if there is a risk of thunder storms or showers during the 12 hour drying time needed for product to dry and carbonize correctly.

CONSUMPTION/COVERAGE

Approximately 1,300 ft2 / 121 mt2 – 1,800 ft2 / 167 mt2 per 15 liter bucket. On rough or porous surfaces predict higher consumption. Determine exact consumption by performing a test on the surface to be treated.

PACKAGING

Plastic buckets of 1, 5 and 15 liters.

APPLICATION CYCLES ON DIFFERENT TYPES OF BASES

Make sure base is solid, dry and well cleaned, prepared with skill. It is recommended to observe the rule VOB DIN 18 363, Part C, paragraph 3

Sheetrock

Apply BioGrip Medium on painted sheetrock diluted with water at 40% as an anchor coat for mineral paints such as BioCalce Classico paints, BioDomus I and II, and all Slaked Lime Plasters. If sheetrock is new virgin material, the sheetrock must be consolidated with EcoForte Consolidator, diluted with water 300% for 1st coat, for all surfaces, and diluted with water 50% and re-applied on all sheetrock mud, and allow to dry for 8 – 12 hours. Apply diluted BioGrip Medium as the anchor coat prior to application of mineral paints or plasters. Another option for consolidation of new sheetrock is to roll or spray 1 coat of BioDomus SuperFlat diluted with water at 40% and allow to dry 8 hours before application of BioGrip Medium. BioGrip Medium can also be used as a tinted paint base for application for BioCalce Classico paints, BioDomus and EcoDomus potassium silicate paints and washes.

WOOD

BioGrip Medium though it can be applied to all types of wood surfaces, it is not suggested as the aggregate size may be undesirable as a primer coat prior to applying BioDomus and EcoDomus paints.

Autoclaved Aerated Concrete

BioGrip Medium is an excellent consolidator and primer paint for all types of Aerated Concrete Blocks which permits the application of BioDomus and EcoDomus paints, BioCement Stucco products, and Slaked Lime plasters such as BioMarmorino and Grassello Bio. BioGrip Medium will penetrate deep into the pours of Aerated Concrete Blocks to strengthen and consolidate the surface to provide dust and particle free hardened surface. BioGrip Medium will also permit applications of any type of cement stucco material to bind to the surface of Aerated Concrete Blocks. Apply BioGrip Medium diluted with water at 30%, 2 coats, before applying finish materials to the block.

Adobe Brick

BioGrip Medium is an excellent consolidator and primer paint for mud brick walls, interior and exterior, which permits the application of BioDomus and EcoDomus paints, BioCement Stucco products, and Slaked Lime plasters such as BioMarmorino and Grassello Bio. BioGrip Medium will penetrate deep into the pours of Adobe or Mud Brick walls to strengthen and consolidate the surface to provide dust and particle free hardened surface. Apply 1 coat of Potassium Silicate Concentrate diluted with water 100%, applying product in one area at a time till the Adobe Brick has completely absorbed the diluted material. Allow to dry for 12 hours before applying BioGrip Medium. Apply BioGrip Medium diluted with water at 30%, 2 coats, allowing 8 hours drying between coats, and allow final coat to dry 12 hours before applying mineral paints, stucco or platers to the block.

New Cement Stuccos

New portland cement should not be painted for about 28 days to ensure proper anchoring and drying. Apply 1 coat of BioGrip Medium with 30% water and allow to dry for at least 12 hours. Apply mineral paints or plasters as directions require. For Natural Lime stucco’s or NHL 3.5 or NHL 5.0 cements, BioMicro Grip is not required to be applied prior to application of mineral paints or plasters. These types of stucco materials can be painted or plastered immediately after stucco has properly set.

Decaying or Crumbling Stuccos or Powdery Surfaces

Chalking surfaces, which could prevent the proper anchoring of the base coating must be removed and pressure washed. Apply Potassium Silicate Concentrate, diluted 100% with water (1:1) on all damaged surfaces and allow to dry for at least 12 hours. Apply Potassium Silicate Concentrate, diluted 100% with water (1:1) on all damaged surfaces, applying 2 – 3 coats in rapid succession and allow to dry for at least 12 hours. Apply 1 coat of BioGrip Medium with 30% water and allow to dry for at least 12 hours. Apply mineral paints or plasters as directions require.

Coatings with Efflorescence

Cement surfaces showing efflorescence should be removed with acid and thoroughly rinsed with water. Apply Potassium Silicate Concentrate, diluted 100% with water (1:1) on all damaged surfaces and allow to dry for at least 12 hours. For coatings on surfaces damaged by the saltpeter or efflorescence no guarantees can be provided. Apply 1 coat of BioGrip Medium with 40% water and allow to dry for at least 12 hours. Apply mineral paints or plasters as directions require.

Aged Cement Stuccos
