Fireplace Makeover Tips & Inspiration

October 3, 2023 //  by Leslie Aiken//  Leave a Comment

Fireplaces are the center of a room and a home. They can be dramatic, subtle, functional, and beautiful. I love a good fireplace. I love watching the fire burn, the crackle, the warmth – all of it! I also love a good painted fireplace makeover every few years. It’s an affordable and easy way to change the aesthetic of a room. Whether you have a wood-burning or gas fireplace, you can beautify and update it easily with Romabio limewash or masonry paint.

Read my 5 fireplace makeover tips, before you paint, and check out 10 gorgeous photos of fireplace paint ideas!

Fireplace Makeover Tips

Tip #1.  Know your surface type

If your fireplace is made of brick, stone, or concrete, choose a mineral-based paint, like Romabio limewash and masonry paints, that will keep the authenticity of the original material with a flatter finish that is not shiny. If your fireplace surround is drywall, use our traditional Interior/Exterior paints or create movement effects with one of our decorative paints.

Tip #2. Think about whether you want to repaint it in a couple of years

All Romabio paints can be repainted at any time. In fact, Classico Limewash® is so easy to touch up you can do it when you please. If you use Romabio authentic, Italian slaked-lime plasters, then you’ll need to consider that they are permanent, but you can achieve the look of plaster on Interior drywall with one of our decorative paints that could be easily repainted.

Tip #3. Choose a color to tie the color tones already in the room

Fireplaces are permanent structures, usually made of brick and stone that were chosen when your home was built. If you own an older home, the fireplace may not match the rest of the walls and look you’ve created. Masonry paint is the perfect way to tie it all together but choose a color that is within the current and updated color tones.

Tip #4. Have fun as you can always change it up later

Even though fireplaces are permanent, you’ll be surprised at how easily you can paint it and change your look if you want to try something new. A painted fireplace makeover is easier than repainting the whole room or house, and just by refreshing the fireplace, you’ll get an entirely new look.

Tip #5. Get the right tools or the right PRO

If you are going to DIY, Romabio paints are so easy to use! My best tip is to buy a Romabio Small Masonry Brush!! It makes a painted fireplace refresh go so much faster and easier; you’ll thank me later.  If your fireplace is multi-story or you just don’t have the time or creative energy to paint, then hire a PRO. Romabio has Preferred PROs you can hire, and some specialize in fireplaces like Carly from Hunted Home; she’s an amazing, creative artist.

Now, with these tips in mind, I want to share some of my favorite fireplace looks. Everything from darker mid-century to classic whites to distressed limewash. I hope you love them as much as I do.

Fireplace Paint Ideas

Dark & Stormy

Nicole from Home with Nicole achieved her updated look with Satin Interior/Exterior in Celtic Stone for a dramatic centerpiece in the room. She chose Satin Interior/Exterior for the brick, because she liked the sheen and the fireplace is nonfuctional – only decorative. It grounds the room and plays off the black trim on the windows. Mid-century perfection. For romance and drama, Susan from Kindred Vintage used Satin Interior/Exterior in Chicago Ink for her bedroom painted fireplace makeover.

Classic White

White is so crisp and clean that sometimes it’s the only choice for your painted fireplace makeover. Cynthia McCloud from Ivory Home Design simplified her outdoor fireplace with Masonry Flat in Avorio White for sipping drinks by the pool and fires on cold crisp nights. Jen from Noting Grace took her fireplace to the next level with Lime Slurry in Grace Note White for a plaster-like slurry effect. Both of these Romabio paints work beautifully with classic, farmhouse styles.

Limewash Beauties

Classico Limewash® is the only choice when you want to keep a little bit of the brick showing and don’t want to go all white. Athens Building Company transformed this room with Classico Limewash in a custom tint with just enough distressing to allow the warmth of the brick to show, and keep the room updated and modern. The second photo is from Lauren at Bless’er House who did the same with her peekaboo distressing with Classico Limewash in Avorio White, just enough limewash to tie the room together.

Natural Stone

Stone is such a beautiful, natural material that it’s hard to think you should paint it, but these fireplaces show you how. First photo is a subtle color-shift with Classico Limewash in a custom color. You can achieve this with our Venetian Glaze, as well, heavily diluting it and keeping the natural element of the stone. The second photo from WhitewashChicago shows how you can transform your entire room with a fireplace that feels authentic, yet not overwhelming with Venetian Glaze in Cristallo White.

Plaster & Decorative Paint

Next level your fireplace by adding authentic Italian plaster. You can make it smoother or just add lots of texture, simple yet so much impact. Or if you want the movement effect of plaster, you can create a gorgeous focal point like Egypt Sherod designed and Hans at Reflections of Italy expertly applied with Velatura Mineralwash in Celtic Stone.
