Latex paint. Chalk paint. Oil-based paint.
In the last century, these types of paint have emerged and are being sold as useful replacements for mineral paint, a popular option around since the 1800s. But don’t believe everything you hear about these newer options and how they compare to mineral paint.
- What is mineral paint? This type of paint is exactly as its name describes – a solution derived from the earth’s natural minerals as a way to create colorful paints without the use of harmful chemicals. It sounds useful and eco friendly, so why replace it?
There are various common myths about mineral paint that may be keeping you from utilizing it, but we’ve come here to debunk them. Here are those misconceptions, followed by why mineral paint does make a great option.
Myth 1: Mineral Paint and Chalk Paint are the Same
While mineral and chalk paint are comparable in texture, these two options are not one and the same. Chalk paint is most recognizable for its matte finish and appearance, while mineral paint can come in different sheens, can be made for different substrates like drywall, siding, brick, or stone, and is durable enough for the Exterior unlike milk paints that use casein as the binder.
Myth 2: Mineral Paint Isn’t Durable
This is completely untrue! Mineral paint is more durable than any other paint for mineral based surfaces like brick, stone or concrete. When you apply a mineral paint to these substrates it calcifies to the surface instead of sealing the surface with a plastic-like film. Romabio Masonry Paints have a 20-year warranty for this reason. Our other paints like Classico Limewash and Lime Slurry will still last a long time without peeling and chipping and we offer Low Lustre Interior/Exterior and Satin Interior/Exterior that are designed to be washable.
Myth 3: Mineral Paint Isn’t Eco-Friendly
Mineral paint is in fact very environmentally friendly! Romabio Mineral paints contain potassium silicate or slaked lime as the main binders, calcium carbonates and titanium, other natural mineral pigments in very high percentages as well as other proprietary ingredients in smaller percentages that are Zero VOCs, so you can feel good about creating a happy and healthy home from floor to ceiling.
Myth 4: Mineral Paint Requires Too Much Preparation
This is false! For Exterior masonry surfaces, Romabio mineral paint is designed to be self-priming, requiring little to no action before you lay down the first coat. A mineral primer is recommended when the surface is not breathable to create a bridge between the mineral paint and surfaces like siding, drywall, etc. The other advantage of mineral paint on masonry is that you can allow the surface be damp vs. when using latex you have to wait for the surface to be bone dry. This saves you a step in that you can pressure wash, prep, and paint on the same day and don’t have to change your schedule because of rain.
